Toyota Avalon: The Best Avalon Yet:
Toyota's new Avalon is the company's flagship sedan, and one that has lifted the stature of the Avalon lineup. In other words it has been improved in almost every way. It's on sale today at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana.ĀWhat Is The Toyota Avalon?
Offering Lexus-like refinement at Toyota prices, the Avalon is the largest sedan in the brand portfolio. Constructed using the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), The Avalon now features more rigid chassis dynamics for improved handling and ride comfort. It now includes an additional 2.0-inches of extended wheelbase resulting in an expansive footwell in the rear seat that features almost as much legroom as a limousine. The Avalon is a four-door sedan that seats five, including room for three comfortably across the rear seat that doesn't squeeze like it might in lesser sedans. The Avalon is available in four other trim levels, including XLE, XSE, Limited and Touring models, in addition to the TRD model. All models are powered by Toyota's 3.5-liter V6 engine.
Finally, the new Toyota Avalon is the first sedan to wear TRD badging. Up to this point, the TRD logo was reserved for use on Toyota SUVs and trucks as an indication of their off-road prowess. Our Avalon represents the fifth-generation vehicle that has been part of the lineup for more than 20-years. But this time, the Avalon TRD is badged in tribute to its on-road performance instead.
Ā What's Under The Hood Of The Toyota Avalon?
Power for this Toyota Avalon comes from a choice of engines, including Toyota's bulletproof 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 engine used throughout the Toyota and Lexus lineup of vehicles. Found in nearly everything from SUVs to Crossovers to luxury sedans, it is as reliable as they come.
In the case of the Toyota Avalon, its V6 manages to produce 301 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 267 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm. At its current horsepower rating, It's the perfect balance between power and fuel efficiency.
All that torque travels from the V6 engine to the front wheels by an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is served up with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift levers. Order the TRD model with its Cat-Back exhaust system for an aggressive, throaty purr from the tailpipes and a track-tuned sport suspension. Oh, in case you weren't of the vernacular, Cat-Back refers to a specialized exhaust system that handles the gases from the catalytic converter rearward.
The Avalon is also offered in an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version, which is new to the lineup this year. Instead of the V6, it is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 205 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. It's the same powertrain as the Camry AWD, with just the right amount of torque and power for dealing with slick or snowy conditions.
Finally, there is the Avalon Hybrid. Powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 + electric motor-generators and producing 215 horsepower, it manages an EPA estimate of 44 city/43 highway mpg.
An Avalon Walkaround
The new Toyota Avalon is a sleek, stylish four-door sedan that is years and miles ahead of its predecessor. Aggressively styled, it's just the thing for buyers not interested in SUVs and wagons. The new styling includes a wide-mouthed grille that is as attention-getting as it is large. It's a swoopy, modern look that appears as though it is a fast runner even while standing still.
There are other looks as well. The new Toyota Avalon Nightshade model based on the XSE model includes darkened trim where the chrome used to be, along with a black grille, mirror caps and a rear spoiler.
The most aggressive of the bunch is the Avalon TRD, which rides 0.6-inches lower than the standard Avalon and features 19-inch performance tires on matte-black alloy wheels. Its aero body kit and front splitter gives it more of a road racer appearance, along with a performance exhaust for added emphasis. This isn't your grandpa's Avalon.
Ā A Look Inside The Toyota Avalon Interior
Spacious and comfortable are words that come to mind when describing the Toyota Avalon. Moving forward from Avalons of the past, the new Avalon is nicely-equipped with the latest technology, but not too much that would scare off traditional buyers. Start with a prominently-placed 9-inch touchscreen display with redundant controls. And in a nod to enthusiasts, the Avalon's gear shift lever allows drivers to row through the gears, if the mood strikes.
But all the goods are not just in the front seat. Back seat passengers will enjoy an impressive amount of legroom, even if they are of the taller persuasion. Fit and finish is stellar, even in the entry-level models. The trunk is spacious at 16 cubic feet, even with the hybrid version of the Avalon.
