Toyota Prius on sale today at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana

Twenty years ago, Toyota embarked on a grand experiment. And at that point, the legendary Toyota Prius was born. Flash forward about two decades and we are looking at the new and improved Toyota Prius. It's a descendant of the vehicle that practically invented the hybrid segment, making it what it is today. It is still the best-selling vehicle in the segment, and it's on sale today at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana.

Now almost every manufacturer offers a hybrid in one form or another. Most are smooth operators, but none has the panache, style, reputation or resale value of the Toyota Prius. Why? Let's take a look.

What are some Prius highlights?

  • Achieves 50 miles per gallon or more.
  • Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Optional All-wheel-drive.
  • Standard suite of safety and driver assists.
  • Excellent reliability history for both the vehicle and its batteries.
Although the Prius helped create a segment that is now filled with competitors, it is still the best-selling hybrid on the market today.Ā
New Toyota Prius Hybrid

What is the new Toyota Prius Hybrid all about?

The Toyota Prius is a gasoline/electric hybrid hatchback vehicle that uses Toyota's successful Synergy Drive system. It combines a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motor-generators for power. The Prius is standard with a 201.6-volt nickel-metal hydride battery or an available 207.2-volt Lithium-ion battery. It puts out 71 horsepower, which combines with the gasoline engine for a combined power output of 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Power travels to the front- or available all-wheel-drive system through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

One of the other cool side features of the Prius is that when it is fully charged, it can run for up to 25 miles on pure electricity, at speeds up to 84 mph. Just remember, the faster you go, the shorter the distance!

In addition to its abilities, Prius owners will enjoy two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, whichever comes first.

How many types of Prius are there?

The Prius is available in seven trim levels, including the base Prius L Eco, the Prius LE, Prius XLE, Prius Limited, Prius LE AWD-e, Prius XLE AWD-e and the commemorative Prius 20th Anniversary Edition.

How does it look?

The Toyota Prius design team went out on a limb this time, creating a set of visually interesting vehicles. Think of a spaceship that never leaves the ground. Futuristic lines with high-tech lighting will do their part to separate the Prius from all the also-rans on the road today. This Prius will attract attention wherever it goes.

The new fourth-generation version is now longer, lower and wider than previous Prius models and are designed to cheat their way through the wind with the best aerodynamics possible. A low-slung hood helps lower the drag coefficient while offering a great view of the road ahead simultaneously.

The Prius 20th Anniversary edition is loaded with aggressive aesthetics with black exterior trim, a color-keyed spoiler, and black-accented wheels. The anniversary special edition is available in Supersonic Red or Wind Chill Pearl colors.
Toyota Prius Interior

What about inside the new Toyota Prius?

The five-passenger Prius underwent a recent makeover that revitalized the cabin with a more upscale ambiance. All models include a 7-inch infotainment screen to replace the previous model, which tapped out slightly more than six inches. Buyers of the top-shelf Prius Limited will enjoy the 11.6-inch touchscreen display's extra dimensions.

Even though the Prius appears as a compact car, it is surprisingly roomy inside. The seats are wide and comfortable, with plenty of legroom front and rear. The Prius retains its center-mounted instrument cluster, where you'll find the speedometer, battery monitors and more. New technology is evident everywhere, including the wireless Qi charging pad for appropriate smartphones.

Listed as a hatchback, the Prius displays great cargo flexibility. Behind the rear seats is 27.4 cubic feet of space. Fold those seats forward and that space grows large enough to accommodate up to 50.7-cubic feet.

Favorite Prius options.

There are many. Among our favorites are the Blind-spot monitoring system and parking sensors, which are part of the Prius LE lineup. Step up further to the Prius XLE for a taste of added luxury, including an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a SofTex interior, rain-sensing wipers, 17-inch wheels and a wireless battery charger.

The top-line Prius Limited model includes a JBL premium audio system, an 11.6-inch infotainment screen, and a color head-up display. There's an available moonroof for both the XLE and Limited models, which can also be had with AWD-e all-wheel-drive functionality.
Behind The Wheel of The Toyota Prius

Behind the wheel of the new Prius.

The new Toyota Prius is a brilliant cruiser and commuter vehicle. With its ability to achieve exceptional fuel economy mileage while keeping you comfortable inside, we think it is hitting on all cylinders--and battery cells. The Prius Hybrid is one of those vehicles that allow you to wave at the gas stations as you cruise by one at a time.

With enthusiastic drive manners, the Prius can hold its own on the Interstate. The included power setting control allows the gasoline/electric hybrid powertrain to be optimized for quicker acceleration. Just stand on it, we say! The Prius's power transfers from the gasoline engine to the electric motor-generator and back again seamlessly, to the point you would be unaware of its occurrence. The Prius AWD-e models are perfect for those who face weather challenges, whether snowy or wet. We are talking to you, Illinois residents!
