Though it had only returned to the marketplace just last year, the new Toyota Supra isn't taking anything for granted. That's why the new Supra was recently updated. The latest version is now on sale at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana.
What is the Toyota Supra?
It's the return of a fabled sports car that brought luster to the brand for many years. An offshoot of the Celica line, the Supra name designated it as the highest performing Toyota in the lineup. So strong and bulletproof were the older Supra models (1978-1986) that many of these classics are still being driven to this day.
But what has changed in the ensuing years has resulted in a sports car that is a pure-bred Japanese sports car with German tuning and Austrian construction roots. The new Toyota Supra has been co-designed and manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr, a contract automobile manufacturer responsible for versions of many famous sports cars and other automobiles and SUVs from manufacturers worldwide.
The Toyota Supra is a two-door, two-seat hardtop sports car powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque or a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and drive the rear wheels in an RWD configuration.
New for this year, Toyota has made several changes to the Supra. These changes include a BMW sourced 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with fewer performance parts and less standard equipment. As a result, the 2.0-liter model is almost as fast as the 3.0-liter engine because it has managed to shed more than 200 pounds of weight.
How does the Toyota Supra look?
A futuristic sports car, the new Toyota Supra features a performance-oriented hood with LED headlamps that lean down to extensive intake scoops for rapid engine cooling. The radical shape continues towards the windshield with two roof-top bubbles offering more headroom for a taller driver and passenger. Further back, fluid hips cover the rear tires and are joined from side to side by a central tail spoiler to keep the Supra's rear-end firmly planted.
It's the perfectly proportioned sports car worthy of the Supra name. Except this Supra has Teutonic road manners that make it more road-worthy than ever before. In other words, this highest performing Toyota really delivers the goods.
A special A91 Supra limited edition model adds many appearance items to the interior and exterior that help differentiate it from a "run-of-the-mill" Supra. As if.
What about inside?
There's more, more, more. For this year's model, the interior is more driver-focused than ever. Double-bubble roofing provides a little, but not a lot of extra headroom. The cargo area is somewhat tight and is more suitable for a couple of duffle bags, although if pressed, you could place up to four roll-aboard suitcases behind the rear seats.
Infotainment is top shelf as well with the new Supra. Designers have dispensed with the 6.5-inch touchscreen display throughout the lineup. In its place, you'll find a larger 8.8-inch display that is now standard across the Supra lineup. A digital gauge display is standard through the range. Navigation and Apple CarPlay are available, but Android Auto is not…yet. Finally, a 12-speaker JBL premium audio system is available as an upgrade to the standard 10-speaker audio system that is strong in its own way.
Safety first.
The Toyota Supra includes plenty of driver assistance features as standard. These include automated emergency braking. Additional items can be added, such as blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. Both are part of the Driver Assistance package.

- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
Warranty and maintenance coverage includes a limited warranty covering 3 years/36,000 miles for the bumper-to-bumper coverage. The Supra's powertrain is warranted for 5 years / 60,000 miles. The Supra includes complimentary scheduled maintenance which is covered for 2 years / 25,000 miles.

Both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models possess a 50:50 weight bias, which is an ideal balance for a sportscar. A stellar 8-speed automatic transmission offers quick and sure shifts throughout the range with the smoothness you would expect from a luxury sedan. And if the automatic is not your speed exactly, switch to the M mode for fun with the paddle shift levers, where you have the choice to shift it yourself. Once again, the choice is yours.
