Just what is the Tacoma?
The Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling midsize truck available for sale today. It carries on a streak that began 15-years ago. The Tacoma's strong reputation for quality, capability, and high resale value remains the envy of the segment.
Recently-refreshed, the Tacoma is flush with standard features. It is powered by choice of two engines that include a 2.7-liter inline-4 cylinder making 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The larger choice is the award-winning 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Both engines can be configured for rear- (RWD) or 4-wheel-drive (4WD), and while the four-cylinder is offered exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, the V6 can be had with a driver's choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.
Following last year's refresh, the Tacoma's upgrades make it stronger than ever. All models include Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), the brand's safety suite of driver assists like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
How does the Toyota Tacoma look?
Futuristic from the front, the new Toyota Tacoma includes a new updated grille and rear fascia. Modern features of the Tacoma include LED daytime running lights. There are several trim levels ranging from SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-road, TRD Pro and Limited models. Each trim level has a distinctive grille that makes it easy to tell apart from other versions.
The Tacoma is available with a choice of Access Cab with half-sized rear doors that allow access to a rear seat that accommodates two people. The larger Tacoma Double Cab includes two full-sized doors for access to the rear seat that accommodates three passengers.
There are two bed sizes. The Tacoma Access Cab is exclusively offered with the longer 6-foot bed, while the Double Cab models offer a choice of either the five- or the larger six-foot bed. May we suggest measuring your garage before attempting to park it there!
There is a special edition added to the new model layout. The new Trail Edition offers many features and includes built-in lockable storage bins on each side of the bed. Additionally, the driver's side bin can double as a cooler, thanks to included drain plugs.
How about inside the Tacoma?
Depending on how you order your Toyota Tacoma will determine if you can carry three- or four of your closest friends with you. While the Access Cab features two small seats in the second row, the larger Double Cab is the perfect family hauler as it can accommodate three passengers with plenty of legroom.
All models include a center console with a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen display. Users can interact with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity through it. SR5 and above models include a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, which accommodates various sized drivers.
Buyers can upgrade a variety of features inside the Tacoma. Some of our favorites include the power moonroof, blind-spot monitoring, JBL Premium Audio system and the Desert Air Intake, known in a polite company as a snorkel.
Behind the wheel of the Toyota Tacoma
Regardless of which engine you choose to equip your Toyota Tacoma, you won't make a bad decision. Start with the 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine. It features 159 horsepower @ 5,200 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque @ 3,800 rpm. It is the perfect way to get around town, run errands and more.
If towing and hauling is part of your day-to-day work schedule or even a way to relieve stress on the weekends, we would suggest the stronger, 278 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 265 lb-ft of torque @ 4,600 rpm. This engine's power and torque allow it to tow up to 6,800 pounds.
Both engines are delivered with six-speed automatic transmissions, but the 3.5-liter mill can also take advantage of a six-speed manual transmission. The third pedal lives! (Fans of manual transmissions will know of what we speak!)
A well-appointed cabin includes soft-touch materials throughout the interior. But it still might not be enough to subdue the lusty rumble of the TRD Pro's cat-back exhaust system. The sound from this high-performance exhaust is sometimes as good as what comes out of the JBL Premium Audio System.
