Toyota RAV4 on sale now at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana.
It's one of the most popular SUV/crossover vehicles on the road today and for good reason. The new Toyota RAV4, now on sale at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana, offers spark, capability, a solid feel, generous standard equipment and more. But best of all, it's a Toyota and it doesn't ride like a truck!
What's a RAV4?
The Toyota RAV4 is a subcompact car-based crossover SUV. Along the way, it has garnered many awards and is considered one of the most popular vehicles on the road today. It's a five-passenger four-door hatchback SUV powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. That torque is transferred through an 8-speed automatic transmission and sent to the RAV4's front- or all-wheel-drive system. The RAV4 is also available in Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions.
Other engines are in the mix too. The RAV4 Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 + electric motor-generators, which combine to produce 219 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm and 163 lb-ft of torque @ 3,600-5,200 rpm. Finally, the RAV4 Prime PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine + electric motor-generators making 302 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm and 165 lb-ft of torque @ 3,600-5,200 rpm.
Now in its fifth-generation, which was introduced in 2019, the RAV4 adds a plug-in hybrid model that can travel up to 42 miles running strictly on battery power. By name, it's the RAV4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid, and it is one of the most compelling reasons to try a hybrid vehicle, especially in CUV form.

How does the RAV4 look?
Definitely not cookie-cutter, the new RAV4 features an angular look at our world. Beginning with a truck-like grille that is faceted to aid in cooling and design concerns, the RAV4 includes thoughtful touches like a clamshell-style hood, LED lighting and squared-off wheel arches.
Some trim levels feature aggressive-looking wheels accented by contrasting color paint schemes, which help them make a statement to the rest of the motoring world. Black body cladding, model-specific front bumpers and large over-fenders are accent marks for the Adventure and TRD off-road trim schemes.
The RAV4 XLE and Limited models eschew the tough look to pursue a more elegant appearance with single-color paint schemes and polished 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the RAV4
One of the most upscale compact crossover interiors in the segment, the RAV4 boasts an impressive look and feel with plenty of soft-touch material located throughout. Take the center stack and its infotainment display screen, for example. It features a very visible 7-inch screen in base models but steps up to an 8-inch display in Limited, Adventure and TRD models. The screen serves as the control center for such features as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa. It is also the base for the RAV4's Navigation and audio systems.
Though there are no power-adjustable front seats, the interior is not exactly Spartan in appearance. Seats are covered in a choice of fabric or SofTex simulated leather, with a variety of accent stitching throughout.Ā Then there is cargo space: The RAV4 offers 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. Fold those forward and that area grows to a total of 69.8 cubic feet. The battery-equipped RAV4 Prime loses a little bit of space because of the battery cells stored within. In this case, the actual cargo capacity drops to 33.5 cubic feet behind the rear seat. That area grows to 63.2 cubic feet when they are folded forward.
Favorite options in the RAV4
There are plenty of available options that can help you make the RAV4 truly your own. Here are a few of our favorites:
- A panoramic moonroof and, if so desired, a contrasting roof color.
- 19-inch alloy wheels add an aggressive look to your RAV4
- Hands-free tailgate. With a sweep of your foot, the tailgate opens without touching.
- Dual-zone automatic climate control. This latest generation of RAV4 includes rear vents.
- Heated/Ventilated front seats. There is nothing better on a cold winter night or a hot summer day.
- Digital rearview mirror.
- 360-degree camera system.
There are more, including safety features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and an 11-speaker / 800-watt JBL premium audio system.
All-wheel-drive is available on gasoline-only RAV4 models and standard on Limited and TRD Off-road versions of the RAV4. They are just the thing for those who routinely travel off-road or live in the Snowbelt.Ā

Behind the wheel of the Toyota RAV4
Driving the new Toyota RAV4 finds a crossover that features a revvy 2.5-liter inline-4 engine that is eager to please regardless of where your travels take you. We found it shifting through the gears of the 8-speed automatic transmission quickly so that it could get to the sweet spot of maximum fuel efficiency. With a minimal amount of wind and road noise, we found a comfortable, quiet crossover that wanted to take us where we wanted to go when we wanted to.
What more could you expect from such a ride?
Ā How about some Torque Vectoring? The RAV4 adventure model has it, along with a high-ride and large tire and wheel package. The torque vectoring can send up to 50-percent of its available power to the rear wheels and vary how much torque is sent from left to right and back. It's just the thing for hitting the trails or on snowy or wet roads.
The Swiss Army Knife of SUVs?
It could be! The RAV4 is such a competent, versatile vehicle that seems to handle every situation it finds itself in. But there is so much more to learn about it. Please stop in at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana to find out more today.
