Crossover styling in a smart hatchback shape.

How would we go about describing the Toyota C-HR? Is it a crossover? An SUV? An off-road trail buster? No, no and no! It doesn't have the ground clearance to hit the trails to go way off-road. Nor does it have the pulling power of a typical SUV. And it can't exactly be described as a crossover either.

Let's call it a hatchback with style instead.

The new Toyota C-HR incorporates a subcompact size with the feel of a low-slung SUV. It features an engaging look that is totally different from nearly all of its competition. Able to stand out from the rest, it is a unique vehicle that looks as well as it goes. When you combine Toyota's legendary build quality and reliability with its resale value, it's clear to see that with the C-HR, you can really go places.

The Toyota C-HR is powered by a naturally-aspirated (non-turbocharged) 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that pushes out 144 horsepower @ 6,100 rpm and 139 lb-ft of torque @ 3,900 rpm. The C-HR utilizes a continuously-variable transmission (CVT) that sends all of the C-HR's power to the front wheels. All-wheel-drive is not available on this model.

How does the new Toyota C-HR look?

In a word? Futuristic! The Toyota C-HR is made up of dynamic lines around the body that all add up to provide a vehicle full of interest to an outside viewer. Begin with a grille and front end similar to many other vehicles in the Toyota fleet. The family resemblance is uncanny! Sculpted sides provide many ways for light to strike the C-HR, and show the facets off like a diamond. As several automotive magazines have suggested, check several colors; the C-HR takes on different looks as the color changes.

If your tastes tend to skew bold, check out the various colors available with contrasting roofs and side mirror caps. For those who choose exclusivity check out the trim level within a trim level: the Toyota C-HR Nightshade Edition brings a black-finished spoiler, badge overlays, 18-inch alloy wheels, black door handles and colors ranging from black, white, gray, or red.Ā

What about inside the Toyota C-HR?

Speaking of diamonds, the interior of the C-HR features a few of those throughout. Start with dashboard, headliner and doors, for a quick sampling. The look is upscale, with comfort and safety at the forefront. A choice of interior color options help to open up the appearance and veer away from a feeling of claustrophobia.

Inside the base LE, there's Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity. Dual-zone automatic climate control is also in the mix. An eight-inch infotainment touchscreen display is the anchor holding down the in-car entertainment system. It also includes satellite radio and a six-speaker audio system.

Choose the XLE trim that includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alerts. The Limited trim model includes LED fog lamps, an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery and adaptive headlights.Ā

Toyota C-HR Extras?

Just because it's entry-level doesn't mean it's low-rent. Consider that the LE can be fitted with available 17-inch alloy wheels. Step up to the XLE and Limited trim levels for an audio upgrade that includes an audio upgrade package with Bluetooth streaming and HD, as well as Satellite Radio.

While the XLE offers a blue/black interior the Limited steps up to a brown/black choice instead. Additionally, the XLE and Limited trims can take advantage of the contrasting roof option.

Behind the wheel of the C-HR.

A blast behind the wheel, the C-HR can be great fun! An impressive suspension encourages enthusiastic turns behind the wheel. The steering is some of the best we have seen in a Toyota, transmitting precise road feel through the steering column directly up to the tiller, itself.

Acceleration is not going to put you on the pole position of a Grand Prix anywhere, but that's not the point of the C-HR. Instead, you'll find yourself behind the wheel of one of the most engaging Toyota vehicles that you have seen in a long time. Just think of the Toyota C-HR as the brother of the Toyota Supra.
