The Toyota Venza on sale now at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana
It's a name from the past that has returned for a second go-round. This time it's ready for prime time. It's the new Toyota Venza crossover SUV and it's on sale today at Napleton's Toyota of Urbana.
The Toyota Venza is one of the newest vehicles in one of the hottest segments amongst car buyers today. We're talking about the mid-size two-row models, which can usually accommodate up to five passengers. Every manufacturer has at least one in the marketplace. Heck, some have even more than one example.
But just what is the new Venza?
In the case of the new Toyota Venza, think of it as the 'tweener. It slots right between the 2-row compact Toyota RAV4 and the larger 3-row Toyota Highlander. As far as taking the best from both models, we think it's perfect.
The new Toyota Venza is larger and more upscale than the RAV4. That's not the only connection to the RAV4 that this new vehicle has. It also utilizes the powertrain that motivates the RAV4 Hybrid. The Venza's initial power comes from a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle inline 4-cylinder engine that combines with a pair of electric motor-generators. The powertrain combines to produce 219 horsepower that makes its way to each corner to each corner of this new Toyota crossover.
Power delivery is via a part-time all-wheel-drive system that works on-demand as needed. Operating primarily as a front-drive vehicle, it will send power to the rear axle when slippage is detected or extra traction is needed as on wet or snowy surfaces. You won't even be aware the system is operating seamlessly and smoothly.

What does the new Toyota Venza look like?
The new Toyota Venza looks exactly like a more expensive SUV from Toyota's more senior luxury brand. You know which one we're talking about that begins with an L. Yes, that one! Sleek and swoopy all around, the only thing missing is the so-called Spindle grille. Its coupe-like proportions look appreciably better than the Venza of years gone by and now resembles a crossover rather than the old Venza's station wagon-like appearance.
In place of the spindle grille is the trapezoidal aperture that is displayed throughout the Toyota lineup. This time, though, it is modified with softer edges for a more classic, elegant appearance. LED head- and running lights help to make a more distinct appearance than any of its competition.
Sleek and clean is the theme of the new Toyota Venza. Uncluttered sides with wheel-arch extensions give the Venza a relaxed, elegant look that appears at home on city streets and country backroads. Touched off by chrome throughout, it is a class-above shape and design that will have you feeling proud of your good taste in purchasing your new vehicle.

What about the Venza interior?
Uncluttered and cleanly configured, the interior of the new Toyota Venza features a large center console. Complete with shift gear, cupholders and other controls, they all lead up to a 12.3-inch infotainment display screen that operates the optional 12-speaker, 1,200-watt JBL Audio system. Navigation is an available option, along with heated and ventilated seats, a surround-view camera, and a ten-inch head-up color display.
There are a couple of other features we really like that ride the fence between technology and wonder. Start with the available Star Gaze panoramic glass roof. The electrochromic glass panel is clear under normal situations but changes to a frosty opaque appearance that softens the light while still allowing it to come into the cabin via a flick of a switch.Ā
What about the Venza safety?
The new Toyota Venza is nothing if not safe. Start with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0). It includes Toyota's Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection (PCS w/PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Automatic Highbeams, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Road Sign Assist.
And if that's not enough, the standard Star Safety System includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology.

Behind the wheel of the new Venza
A great driving experience awaits those who climb behind the wheel of the Toyota Venza crossover. With its high seating and exceptional visibility down the road, there's no better seat in the house.
The hybrid powertrain controlling the Venza feels stronger than its official reading of 219 horsepower. Credit goes to the instantaneous torque of the twin motor-generators which launch the Toyota Venza as though it were an electric slot-car. The operation is seamless and a driver would hardly realize power is transitioning from the gasoline engine to the motor-generator and vice-versa.
The Venza drive system acts primarily as a front-drive system, using the front wheels for primary launching. Additional torque will be sent to the rear axle under slippery circumstances, reverting to the front-drive as traction is regained. The Venza uses a continually variable transmission (CVT) but combines its output with that of the electric motor-generators to the point you are hardly aware of its presence.
A new feature of the hybrid system is the ability to dial-in a level of regenerative braking via a console-mounted gear-lever switch. Dialing in extra braking will allow the driver to send additional torque to the front axle as needed.
